Library Lowdown

The Library has been a busy place this year!
Kindergarten classes have been working hard on procedures and book care.  By the end of October all 4 classes will have earned the privilege of choosing their Library books from shelves after lots of practice with choosing books from a cart.  Oreo Cheer!!  (Just ask a Kindergartener!)
First Graders are getting smart about choosing "good fit" books.  We'll be working on choosing one fiction book and one non-fiction book soon.
Second Graders have been learning about using our online Library Catalog, Destiny.  In November and December, they'll have more opportunities to try it out!
Third and Fourth Graders enjoyed Toni Buzzeo's book Our Librarian Won't Tell Us ANYTHING! as an intro for digging deeper into how the Dewey Decimal System helps us find things in the Library.
Fifth Graders have been working on their Library Skills Matrix.  Many students have already completed (or are very close to finishing) their Destiny Practice and Prove It Log.  They've been using Destiny to look up books, and then locating those books on the shelves.  I've been impressed with many of these young Librarians!
If you haven't visited in a while, be sure to look at the Destiny Homepage for McKenney-Harrison.  Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade Students should all be able to get there from the MCK website or the district website.  We have some great links under Non-Fiction Resources, including PebbleGo, True Flix, and National Geographic Kids that we used last year and a new one for us, NewsELA for current event articles written at several different reading levels.  Another website that corresponds to one of the Young Hoosier Book Award nominees we're reading in November is The Firehouse Light under Author and Illustrator Sites.
Happy Reading!
